[Australia's Lynas will build a new heavy rare earth plant in Malaysia] Australia's Lynas Rare Earths will reportedly build a new heavy rare earth separation facility in Malaysia to meet the needs of buyers of these critical minerals. The Australian miner intends to start producing samarium early next year and then increase production of other heavy rare earths. Samarium is an essential material for magnets required for defense technologies such as the F-35 fighter jet. Lynas has been producing so-called light rare earths in Malaysia since 2012. Lynas recently raised approximately A$932 million (equivalent to US$614 million), pledging to accelerate expansion in what it calls a rapidly changing market. The newly announced plant will be able to separate up to 5,000 tons of heavy rare earth raw materials each year, which Lynas will purchase from its Mt Weld deposit in Australia and other yet-to-be-developed sources such as ionic clay deposits in Malaysia.
