[Brazil's LNG Import Capacity Doubles, Energy Strategy Transformation Accelerates] ⑴ Brazil's LNG regasification infrastructure has been expanding continuously since 2020, resulting in a doubling of import capacity. ⑵ Regasification capacity will increase from 2.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2020 to 5.1 billion cubic feet per day in August 2025. ⑶ Three new terminals added in 2024 will bring 1.74 billion cubic feet per day of capacity, including key facilities such as the Bacarena FSRU. ⑷ The Suapé FSRU terminal is under construction and is expected to be operational in early 2026, with a capacity of 700 million cubic feet per day. ⑸ The core of the expansion strategy is integrated LNG power generation, with each imported facility paired with a large-scale natural gas power plant. ⑹ Federal law requires an additional 8 gigawatts of regionalized natural gas power generation capacity and aims to break the monopoly of Petrobras. ⑺ The United States supplies 72% of Brazil's LNG imports, but the country is shifting towards long-term contracts in pursuit of price stability. (8) Coastal LNG terminals supply gas to areas lacking pipelines and provide flexible backup for grids that rely on renewable energy.
