[US FDA: Multiple Pharmaceutical Companies Recall Over 580,000 Bottles of Blood Pressure Drug Contaminated with Carcinogen] On October 31, local time, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that multiple pharmaceutical companies are recalling over 580,000 bottles of the blood pressure drug prazosin hydrochloride contaminated with a carcinogen. The FDA stated that Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Inc. and Amgen Health Services, both based in New Jersey, initiated a voluntary nationwide recall earlier this month. This drug is used to dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure, and is also commonly used to treat nightmares and sleep problems caused by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The FDA stated in its announcement that some batches of the drug may contain N-nitrosamines, a potentially carcinogenic compound that can form during drug manufacturing or storage. The regulatory agency has classified this recall as a "Level 2 risk event." (CCTV News)
