A report released by the UK Health Security Agency on October 31 showed an increase in confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in England for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. Although rare, the disease can have serious consequences and even be life-threatening, and children and young people, especially university students, remain at risk of infection. The report showed that there were 378 confirmed cases of IMD in England this year, up from 340 cases the previous year. Data indicated that group B meningococcus was the most common cause of infection, accounting for 82.6% of all cases, including 90% of infant cases and 100% of cases in adolescents aged 15 to 19.
