Israel and Lebanon reached a 10-day ceasefire agreement, with Trump calling it a breakthrough in US-Iran negotiations.

Tensions in the Middle East have shown significant signs of easing. Israel and Lebanon, brokered by the United States, reached a 10-day ceasefire agreement, which not only brings hope for ending the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah but also paves the way for nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. US President Trump highly praised the agreement, considering it an important step towards lasting peace in the region.

Israel and Lebanon reach a 10-day ceasefire agreement, creating conditions for broader peace talks.

Under the agreement, Israel and Lebanon will begin a 10-day ceasefire at 9:00 PM GMT on Thursday, April 16. This agreement was reached with active support from Washington. The White House stated that Trump personally spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and twice called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump also indicated his intention to invite the two leaders to a meeting at the White House within the next week or two to push for a longer-term peace agreement.

The U.S. State Department released a six-point memorandum showing that both sides agreed, with U.S. facilitation, to work toward creating conditions conducive to lasting peace between the two countries, including mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, the establishment of a security mechanism on their common borders, and the preservation of Israel's right to self-defense.

In a video statement, Netanyahu said Israel had agreed to the temporary ceasefire and believed there was an opportunity to reach a historic agreement with Lebanon. However, he also emphasized that Israel would not completely withdraw from southern Lebanon, would maintain a "safe zone" extending to the Syrian border, and insisted on disarming Hezbollah.

Hezbollah responded for the first time, stating that any ceasefire could not allow Israel to move freely within Lebanon. Senior Hezbollah member Hassan Fadlallah said that a ceasefire was achieved thanks to Iran's diplomatic efforts, and everything depended on Israel's complete cessation of hostilities.

Trump actively mediated, and Pakistan played a key mediating role.

After announcing the ceasefire, Trump told reporters that Lebanon had agreed to "deal with Hezbollah" and that both sides would work towards a longer-term agreement. He also revealed that the next face-to-face meeting between the United States and Iran might be held in Islamabad this weekend, further boosting optimism that the war with Iran might be coming to an end.

Pakistan played a crucial mediating role in this process. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry had previously stated clearly that peace in Lebanon was a key prerequisite for advancing the Iranian nuclear negotiations. Pakistani Army Chief of Staff Munir visited Tehran on Wednesday and made breakthroughs on thorny issues, creating favorable conditions for the second round of negotiations.

Progress has been made in US-Iran negotiations, with signs of compromise emerging on the nuclear issue.

Trump stated that Iran has proposed not possessing nuclear weapons for more than 20 years, indicating some room for compromise on the nuclear issue. The US proposed a 20-year moratorium on all Iranian nuclear activities, while Iran suggested a 3-5 year moratorium. Regarding its highly enriched uranium stockpile, Iran is considering removing some (but not all) of its highly enriched uranium from the country, which is seen as a significant sign of compromise.

Trump emphasized that if the US and Iran can reach an agreement, oil prices will fall sharply and inflationary pressures will be significantly alleviated. "More importantly, we will avoid a nuclear catastrophe."

Iran has stated that the Strait of Hormuz will only reopen if a permanent ceasefire agreement is reached, the United Nations provides security guarantees, and the US and Israel refrain from further attacks. The United States, on the other hand, is prepared to lift some sanctions and unfreeze Iranian assets once an agreement is reached.

Uncertainty remains, and the prospects for a ceasefire still need to be tested.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, significant differences remain among the parties. Netanyahu insists that Israel must maintain a security presence in Lebanon, while Hezbollah firmly opposes the presence of Israeli troops in Lebanon. Analysts point out that whether this 10-day ceasefire agreement can be successfully extended and transformed into long-term peace remains highly uncertain.

U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth stated that the U.S. military is prepared to resume combat operations if negotiations fail to reach an agreement.

Overall Outlook

The 10-day ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon, along with renewed hopes for US-Iran negotiations, marks a significant turning point in the Middle East situation. This development not only promises to ease current tensions in the global energy market but also opens a window for a broader regional peace process. However, due to profound differences among the parties on nuclear issues, security arrangements, and territorial sovereignty, achieving lasting peace ultimately requires greater political will and flexibility from all sides.

The Islamabad talks and the White House leaders' summit in the coming week will be crucial in determining the direction of the Middle East situation. Global markets are closely watching whether these diplomatic efforts can translate into tangible results.
