[Trump Plans to Use Defense Production Act to Allocate $700 Million to Support Coal Industry] (1) US President Trump is expected to announce that the government will invest approximately $700 million to support the coal industry and will use wartime powers granted by the Defense Production Act. (2) The allocation of funds includes: $425 million to 13 existing coal-fired power plants and $75 million to a coal export terminal in California; in addition, the Department of Energy will provide a $185 million grant to build two new coal-fired power plants in Alaska and West Virginia and to restart a power plant in Maryland. (3) Coal-fired power generation in the United States has been declining since its peak in 2007. Coal is controversial due to pollution and climate change issues, but the Trump administration considers it a reliable source of electricity and has repeatedly called it "clean" and "beautiful." The related funding announcement event is expected to be held in the Oval Office on Thursday.
