[Iran and Oman Close to Agreement on Strait of Hormuz Shipping Access] ⑴ A spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee stated that Iran and Oman have essentially finalized an agreement regarding shipping access to the Strait of Hormuz, but this does not mean the strait will be reopened. ⑵ The two sides previously reached a consensus in August to establish a temporary shipping passage and jointly clear mines from the channel, while continuing consultations on a permanent passage plan. ⑶ The official emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed, with the following conditions: the US must accept and implement the conditions proposed by Iran based on the 14-point Islamabad memorandum signed by Iran and the US in June, and Iranian armed forces will continue to control the strait. ⑷ In late February of this year, the US and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets, and Iran subsequently retaliated; a ceasefire memorandum was signed in June, but the conflict quickly reignited, and the situation remains unresolved. ⑸ The escalation of the conflict has almost completely disrupted shipping activities along this crucial global route for crude oil, refined oil products, and liquefied natural gas, causing fuel prices in many countries to rise.
