The Central Bank of Ukraine (CBNU) continued to tighten monetary policy, raising its benchmark interest rate to 16%. The CBNU announced on Thursday that it would raise its key interest rate by 50 basis points to 16%, marking the beginning of an unusual series of rate hikes. CBNU officials stated that inflationary pressures persist due to escalating airstrikes and increased wartime uncertainty. The CBNU also noted in its announcement that the Russia-Ukraine conflict, coupled with the situation in the Middle East, has pushed up inflation; the country's consumer price inflation rose to 8.1% year-on-year in August.
