[WTO Director-General Warns: AI-Related Trade Masks Tariffs and Global Trade Disruptions, Growth Sustainability in Doubt] (1) WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala warned that trade in artificial intelligence-related products is masking the negative impacts of Trump's tariffs and other trade turmoil. (2) The latest WTO data shows that in the first quarter of 2026, trade in AI-related goods such as semiconductors, chemicals, and industrial equipment increased by 42% year-on-year; trade in non-AI-related goods increased by only 7%. (3) In an interview in Geneva, she said: "AI-related trade masks tariffs and various disruptions to global trade." (4) She warned: "If the AI boom is a bubble, then this trade growth cannot be sustained. We need to carefully observe how long this engine of trade growth can be maintained."
