Gold prices are facing resistance at the $4,000 level, but institutions still see a target of $5,500, though the probability of a decline has been lowered to 60%.

Gold prices, struggling near the $4,000 per ounce mark, are testing investor confidence in the precious metal. While many institutions have become more cautious as a result, State Street, a leading asset management firm, remains optimistic, maintaining its view that gold prices will recover lost ground and reach $5,500 by early next year. However, persistently high inflation, rising bond yields, and an increasingly hawkish Federal Reserve are casting a shadow over this bullish outlook.

Gold prices briefly fell below the $4,000 mark, but State Street remains bullish on $5,500.

State Street Investment Management, in its latest Monthly Gold Monitor, maintained its forecast that gold prices will fluctuate between $4,750 and $5,500 per ounce by the end of the first quarter of 2027. However, with rising interest rates and a stronger dollar continuing to weigh on this non-interest-bearing asset, the company lowered the probability of this scenario from 70% to 60%. The gold research team, led by Aakash Doshi, head of gold strategy at State Street, pointed out that while structural demand continues to support the overall gold market, uncertainty surrounding the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy is increasing. This latest report also shows a more cautious stance than in late September. At that time, Doshi stated that while rising bond yields could push gold prices towards $4,000, the broader bull market pattern remained intact. At that time, Doshi considered $4,000 a potential bottom for gold prices and maintained that gold prices could reach $5,000 by June 2027. While this longer-term optimistic outlook remains, State Street's latest report suggests that the road to higher prices is becoming increasingly bumpy. The firm now assigns a 35% probability to its bearish scenario, predicting that gold prices will hover between $4,000 and $4,750 over the next six to nine months. 图片点击可在新窗口打开查看

Increased market expectations of interest rate hikes and rising yields raise the cost of holding gold.

State Street noted in its report that spot gold prices fell 6.57% in September, influenced by the Federal Reserve's 25 basis point rate hike and investors beginning to price in further tightening expectations. The money market's pricing of the Fed's interest rate path has also undergone a dramatic restructuring: as of the end of August, the market expected only 1.5 rate hikes of 25 basis points by June 2027; however, after the September policy decision, market expectations shifted to 3.3 additional rate hikes over the following nine months. According to the FedWatch tool, the market expects the Fed to keep rates unchanged later this week, but with a greater than 80% probability of a rate hike in December, and continues to price in the possibility of further rate hikes in the first quarter of 2027. This shift in interest rate expectations, and the resulting rise in Treasury yields, pushed the dollar to a two-month high, thereby increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold.

Institutional funds flowed in against the trend, and gold remained resilient.

Despite the aforementioned headwinds, State Street stated that precious metals have demonstrated unexpected resilience, particularly with investment demand remaining relatively healthy. The report shows that despite price declines, US-listed gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) still attracted $11.7 billion in net inflows in the third quarter, with $3.7 billion flowing in in September alone, completely offsetting the $5.6 billion outflow in the second quarter. Analysts stated, "In our view, this indicates that strategic investors are continuing to allocate gold, using it as a currency hedge, alternative fiat asset, and portfolio diversification tool."

The Federal Reserve may be misjudging the benefits of AI, and the risk of stagflation is emerging.

The report also highlights growing market concerns that the Federal Reserve may again make a policy mistake by overestimating the economic benefits of artificial intelligence. State Street warns that central banks may be assuming that AI-driven productivity gains will allow the US economy to withstand restrictive monetary policy for a longer period. If these productivity gains fail to materialize in time, higher borrowing costs will cause significant problems for consumers, businesses, and the federal government. State Street points out that the Fed expects core inflation to return to its 2% target until 2029, which could leave policymakers with little room to ease policy once economic growth begins to deteriorate. This scenario could create a stagflationary environment, characterized by persistently high inflation alongside weakening economic activity. State Street believes that such an environment would ultimately strengthen gold's appeal as a store of value and a hedge against monetary policy uncertainty.

Technical Analysis: $4,000 Becomes a Key Watershed

Meanwhile, State Street's technical analysis further highlights the importance of the $4,000 level. The report shows that September gold prices closed below the 50-day moving average at approximately $4,322 and the 200-day moving average at approximately $4,539, both of which constitute potential resistance to any sustained rally. The company also identified initial technical support at approximately $4,121, followed by the psychologically significant $4,000 level. A sustained break below these levels would increase the risk of a deeper correction; conversely, a recovery above $4,231 would provide an initial signal that selling pressure is beginning to ease.

Conclusion

On one hand, gold is facing triple pressure from inflation, interest rates, and a strong dollar; on the other hand, it stands firm against the support of institutional funds and structural demand. Gold prices are currently at the $4,000 mark, a crucial dividing line between bullish and bearish sentiment. State Street's optimism is far from blind, but whether this charge towards $5,500 can withstand the headwinds brought about by the Fed's policy shift remains to be seen. 图片点击可在新窗口打开查看 Spot gold daily chart source: FX678.
