Federal Reserve: Inflationary pressures remain; decision to keep interest rates unchanged

2026-10-29 02:14:25

The Federal Reserve voted on Wednesday to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged. Despite mounting signs that upward price pressures are more challenging than policymakers anticipated, the Fed chose to remain cautious and patient in its fight against inflation. This decision was in line with market expectations. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) maintained the overnight federal funds rate in the 3.75%–4% range. This rate has remained at this level since the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points in September. The post-meeting statement read: “Inflation remains high. The Committee will continue to gather further information to determine the appropriate stance of policy to ensure that inflation returns to its 2 percent objective in a timely manner. The Committee will strive to achieve price stability.” Disagreements emerged among the committee members: two voted against the rate hike, and Cook received his first dissenting vote. Of the 12 voting FOMC members, two voted against the decision: Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammark, both of whom advocated for a 25 basis point rate hike. Cook has recently been embroiled in controversy. The Trump administration attempted to remove her from her position as a governor, citing issues with her reporting of mortgage application information. Although the Supreme Court previously halted the removal, the administration restarted the process, with hearings scheduled for early November. Cook, a Biden nominee who joined the Fed in 2022, is casting her first dissenting vote since taking office. Dallas Fed President Lori Logan and Minneapolis Fed President Neal Kashkari, who also voted against the rate hike at the July meeting alongside Hammark, both stated the need for further increases. However, at Wednesday's meeting, they aligned with the majority of members. The midterm elections loomed over this interest rate decision. A crucial vote will be held nationwide on November 3rd, soon to determine who controls Congress. Fed officials consider political independence a cornerstone of the central bank, but many observers speculate that with the election approaching, Fed officials are reluctant to raise rates at this juncture. Warsh was nominated by Trump to be Fed Chair, and Trump has consistently disagreed with the Fed's policy stance for years, repeatedly suggesting that the federal funds rate should be lowered further. The disagreements among committee members reflect a core contradiction within the committee: how aggressively should interest rates be raised to curb inflation? Inflation has been above the Fed's 2% target for over five years, and the pace of price increases has accelerated since the September meeting. However, in recent weeks, several officials have stated their desire to obtain more economic data before further tightening monetary policy. Fed Vice Chairman Philip Jefferson and New York Fed President John Williams both mentioned that the current economic environment allows policymakers more time to assess their next steps. The post-meeting statement revised its description of economic activity to "strong expansion," an upgrade from the "solid" wording in the September version. Aside from deleting a paragraph explaining the reasons for the September rate hike, the statement remained largely unchanged. Market Pricing: A pause in rate hikes is not the end; expectations for a December rate hike are rising. Previous market pricing indicated a less than 10% probability of a rate hike, so maintaining the current rate was not unexpected. However, this decision also raises new questions: how long are policymakers willing to wait before tightening policy again? Futures market pricing indicates a high probability of another rate hike at the next FOMC meeting in December, with potentially one or two more hikes in 2027. The market awaits a press conference by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at 2:30 PM Eastern Time for clues about future policy direction. Warsh has consistently avoided providing so-called "forward guidance," directly revealing the FOMC's policy intentions. In June, other members signaled a high probability of another rate hike this year through the dot plot. Complex Fundamentals: High Inflation Overlapping with Strong Growth, Increasing the Difficulty of Policy Balancing These policy choices are situated within a complex economic and political environment. Based on the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, even excluding volatile food and energy prices, September inflation is expected to remain above 3%. Economists worry that inflationary pressures are no longer limited to the energy sector but are also impacted by the situation in Iran. Meanwhile, the US unemployment rate remains low, and economic growth is robust. The Atlanta Fed's GDPNow real-time model predicts that third-quarter GDP annualized growth could reach 3.4%, the highest level in a year. Household consumption expenditures remained robust, and investment driven by the artificial intelligence boom continued to provide momentum for the US economy. However, this combination of data has also sparked heated debate: how much of a constraint do current interest rates actually exert on the economy; and if inflation data does not improve, should policymakers take more aggressive measures to raise interest rates?
