Italy's Central Statistics Institute predicts continued population decline. The latest population forecast released by the Italian Central Statistics Institute on the 28th indicates that Italy's population will continue to decline over the coming decades, potentially decreasing by nearly a quarter by 2080. The southern region is projected to experience the most severe population loss. According to the report, Italy's current population of approximately 59 million is projected to decline to 54.7 million by 2050 and further to 45.8 million by 2080, representing a decrease of approximately 22% from current levels. Analysis shows that Italy has experienced negative natural population growth for over 15 consecutive years. While immigration has mitigated the overall population decline to some extent, it is unlikely to fundamentally reverse the situation. The report states that as the population continues to decline, Italy's age structure will also undergo significant changes. By 2050, the proportion of people aged 65 and over is projected to rise from 24.3% today to 34.6%, while the proportion of the working-age population (15 to 64) will decline from 63.5% today to 54.3%. The proportion of people under 14 will decline slightly to 11.2%. (Xinhua News Agency)
