Italy's non-EU trade surplus shrinks: Imports surge, exports grow slower than expected. ⑴ On July 29th, data released by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) showed that Italy's trade surplus with non-EU countries declined in June, as import growth outpaced export growth. ⑵ Specifically, the non-EU trade surplus fell to €5.4 billion from €6.1 billion in the same period last year. ⑶ Excluding energy factors, the trade surplus also fell to €9.3 billion from €9.7 billion in the same period last year. ⑷ Although overall exports grew 4.7% year-on-year in June, reversing a 4.6% decline in May, imports rebounded strongly by 10.0% during the same period, far outstripping export growth. ⑸ Monthly data showed a 6.0% month-on-month increase in exports in June, reversing a 3.0% decline in the previous month; imports also grew by 5.1% month-on-month, following a 7.3% decline in May. ⑹ Due to seasonal adjustments, the trade surplus increased to €4.9 billion from €4.4 billion in May. ⑺ Despite some improvement in monthly data, the decline in the annual trade surplus shows that Italy's trade balance faces new challenges in the context of a complex and changing global trade environment.
