The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index rose slightly in July from 95.2 in June to 97.2 in July. The current situation index fell 1.5 points to 131.5, while the expectations index rose 4.5 points to 74.4. However, expectations remained below the 80 threshold, marking the sixth consecutive month of decline. "Consumer confidence has stabilized since May, rebounding from the plunge in April, but remains below last year's heady levels," said Guichard, senior economist for global indicators at the conference board. Pessimism about the future receded in July, leading to a slight improvement in overall confidence. All three components of the expectations index improved, with consumers' pessimism about future business conditions and employment easing and optimism about future income rising. Meanwhile, consumers' assessment of the current situation changed little. However, their assessment of current job opportunities declined for the seventh consecutive month, reaching its lowest level since March 2021.
