[YouTube will be included in Australia's youth social media ban] Australia will include YouTube in the social media ban for children under 16, which is a change in officials' attitude after the Google-owned video site was initially excluded from the legislation. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Communications Minister Annika Wells will confirm the decision on Wednesday. The ban will take effect at the end of 2025. Although the legislation allows the Australian government to flexibly adjust the list of companies that must comply, YouTube's exclusion has angered its competitors Meta Platforms Inc. and Snap Inc. In April of this year, it was revealed that the then Communications Minister Michel Rolland had privately promised to grant the video site an exemption, which further exacerbated the dissatisfaction of all parties.
