China Iron and Steel Association: Steel Industry Performance Better Than Expected in First Half of the Year. According to statistics from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), steel companies' cumulative operating revenue in the first half of the year was 2.9985 trillion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 5.79%; operating costs were 2.8055 trillion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 6.83%; total profits were 59.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 63.26%; and the average profit margin was 1.97%, a year-on-year increase of 0.83 percentage points. This was learned from the 11th (Expanded) Meeting of the Sixth Council of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) held in Caofeidian, Tangshan on the 30th. "In the first half of the year, the steel industry actively responded to the challenges of strong supply and weak demand, strengthened industry self-discipline, and adjusted production rhythms. This resulted in a steady decline in crude steel output, year-on-year improvement in economic benefits, and continued improvement in environmental protection levels. Overall, the industry performed better than expected," said Zhao Minge, President of the CISA. This self-disciplined production control and stable operation were the core reasons for the improved industry profits. This not only maintained low steel inventories, a basic balance between supply and demand, and relatively stable steel prices, but also led to a decrease in raw material demand and a downward shift in the center of gravity for costs.
