Nordic Electricity Prices Soar: Energy Market Undercurrents Surge, What Future Do Seven-Month Highs Portend? ⑴ On July 30th, Beijing Time, the price of Nordic front-end quarterly electricity contracts soared to a more than seven-month high. ⑵ As of 7:36 PM Beijing Time that evening, the price of Nordic front-end quarterly electricity contracts rose by €0.97 to €49.45/MWh, reaching its highest point since early December 2024. ⑶ The price of Nordic front-end annual contracts also rose by €0.55 to €39.25/MWh. ⑷ This increase was primarily driven by rising prices in European natural gas and German electricity markets, as well as a weak hydrological balance. ⑸ Lukas Sigg, CEO of a prominent energy consulting firm, noted that despite improvements in short-term hydrological conditions, the long-term outlook remains dry. ⑹ Wholesale natural gas prices in the Netherlands and the UK rose due to Trump's tariff rhetoric. ⑺ Germany's electricity price for next year rose by €1.81 to €87.3/MWh. ⑻ Northern European hydropower reserves for the next 15 days are shown to be 1.56 TWh above normal, compared to 0.53 TWh below normal on Monday. ⑼ Weather forecasts indicate that the weather will remain unstable over the next week and may turn dry thereafter.
