Myanmar announces lifting of state of emergency effective August 1st. (1) Myanmar's National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) decided on July 31st to lift the four-and-a-half-year state of emergency effective August 1st, establishing a new federal government with U Nyu Soe as Prime Minister. (2) The National Security and Peace Council (NSPC) will consist of 10 members, with Min Aung Hlaing continuing to serve as Chairperson, Acting President, and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces. The government announced plans to hold a multi-party general election within six months of the end of the state of emergency.
