[Capital Economics: Canada's GDP may improve in the third quarter] Canada's monthly GDP data suggests that the economy may improve in the third quarter following a rebound in June. Official data showed that GDP fell by 0.1% in May, following a similar decline in the previous month. However, Statistics Canada estimated that GDP by sector grew by 0.1% in June, which means that GDP (excluding investment and spending) in the second quarter will fall by an annualized rate of 0.2%. Capital Economics said that the decline in May can be attributed to some temporary factors, such as the upgrading of refineries in the energy sector. Spending by the public administration sector declined, which was a return to the economic growth driven by the election in April. When discussing third-quarter GDP, Capital Economics said that although GDP may have contracted in the second quarter, "we do not expect the same situation to occur this quarter." (Dow Jones)
