[US refiner Phillips 66 was ordered to pay $800 million in compensation for stealing trade secrets] Court documents show that Phillips 66 was ordered to pay $800 million in compensation to biofuel producer Propel Fuels for stealing trade secrets from the company to increase its renewable fuel production capacity. Phillips 66 approached Propel Fuels in 2017, hoping to acquire the company to strengthen its renewable fuel business in California, but abruptly withdrew from the deal in 2018 and began selling its own renewable fuel in 2019. In 2022, Propel Fuels sued Phillips 66, accusing the company of illegally using trade secrets it shared during negotiations, including financial data and business strategies.
