[Heated Debate in New Delhi: India-US Trade Game Under the Shadow of Trump's Tariffs] ⑴ India and the United States will hold trade talks in New Delhi on Tuesday. This move comes weeks after US President Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Indian exports, causing India's overall exports to fall to a nine-month low of $35.1 billion in August. ⑵ India's chief negotiator, Rajesh Agarwal, stated that the two countries will "rapidly advance" trade negotiations. Meanwhile, US Trade Representative for South Asia, Brendan Lynch, will also make a one-day visit. ⑶ Data shows that India's exports fell from $37.24 billion in July to $35.1 billion in August, and the trade deficit narrowed to $26.49 billion from $27.35 billion in July. ⑷ On August 27, the United States imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total tariff on Indian exports to 50%, one of the highest among US trading partners. ⑸ As a result, India's exports to the United States fell from $8.01 billion in July to $6.86 billion in August. From April to August, India's total exports to the US were US$40.39 billion. ⑹ However, the full impact of market concerns sparked by Trump's tariff rhetoric is expected to be felt next month, as the punitive tariffs only took effect on August 27.
