[S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record highs at the start of the Fed meeting week] The S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record highs during trading on Monday, performing strongly at the start of this week's Federal Reserve policy meeting, while Tesla shares rose after CEO Elon Musk purchased shares. The electric car maker surged 5.8% to its highest level since late January after regulatory filings showed that Musk acquired nearly $1 billion worth of Tesla shares on Friday. September was the worst month in history for the U.S. stock market, and the major indices have performed positively so far. Data compiled by LSEG shows that since 2000, the benchmark S&P 500 has fallen an average of 1.5% in the month. In the last batch of data before the Federal Reserve's September 16-17 meeting, Tuesday's retail sales report will provide important information about the health of the U.S. consumer, while last week's inflation data was slightly higher than expected.
