The Trump administration announced that, under a trade agreement reached between the United States and Japan, the United States will formally implement a lower 15% tariff on auto and auto parts imported from Japan starting Tuesday morning, Eastern Time. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance document on implementing the agreement states that the lower rate will apply to "Japanese-made passenger cars, light trucks (automobiles), and auto parts delivered for consumption or removed from storage for consumption on or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 16, 2025." Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order implementing the agreement, which will impose tariffs of up to 15% on most Japanese products, including autos. Tokyo had previously urged the U.S. government to honor the agreement and reduce the auto tariff from 27.5%, a move considered crucial for the auto industry, a major driver of Japan's economy.
