Coffee futures are near record highs as speculators bet on reduced Brazilian crop supplies. Coffee futures are currently hovering near all-time highs, with market speculators betting that tariffs and drought will reduce supplies from top producer Brazil. On Tuesday, the most active Arabica coffee contract hit $4.24 per pound in New York, just below the all-time high of $4.2995 reached in February. Futures prices have risen approximately 50% since early August, driven by concerns that Brazilian supplies will not be able to fully replenish shrinking inventories. A report from trader I & M Smith Ltd. indicates that speculative buying, despite low trading volume, pushed prices above the $4 mark. The upward momentum attracted further buying, "creating room for further gains due to a lack of selling."
