A chart: The Baltic Index saw weekly gains on strength in Capesize and Panamax vessels

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which monitors freight rates for ships transporting dry bulk commodities, edged up on Friday and was on track for a weekly gain, helped by higher Capesize and Panamax rates.
The main index measuring rates for Capesize, Panamax and Supramax vessels rose 13 points to 1,936. The index rose 1.8% this week.
The Capesize index rose 13 points to 2,799, bringing its weekly gain to 2.8%.
Average daily earnings for capesize vessels, which typically transport 150,000 tonnes of cargo such as iron ore and coal, rose by $115 to $23,216.
Iron ore futures rose on Friday and recorded a weekly gain, supported by expectations of stronger steel prices and improving market fundamentals.
The Panamax index rose 34 points to 1,764, closing up 6.1% for the week.
Average daily earnings for Panamax vessels, which typically carry 60,000-70,000 tonnes of coal or grain, rose $305 to $15,873.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index fell 1 point to 1,402, its lowest level since Aug. 22. The contract fell 3.1% this week.
