[Hungary will once again hold parliamentary elections under a state of emergency] The Hungarian Parliament passed a resolution on Tuesday to extend the state of emergency that has been in place for many years for another 180 days until May 14 next year. This means that the country's next parliamentary election will be held under this special legal system that gives Prime Minister Orban broad ruling powers. Orban has said that general elections are expected to be held as early as April next year, and the president is expected to officially announce the election date early next year. The Fidesz party led by Orban currently lags behind the opposition led by former system insider Magyar Peter in support. The cost of living crisis and allegations of systemic corruption have weakened the political appeal of the nationalist prime minister, and some polls show that the opposition maintains a double-digit lead over the ruling party.
