[Indonesia Aims for Trade Agreement with US by End of 2025] 1. Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hattato stated on Friday that Indonesia aims to reach a trade agreement with the United States by the end of 2025 and will send a delegation to Washington next week for final consultations. 2. Hattato noted that senior officials from both sides "have agreed to work on finalizing the consensus reached by the two leaders on July 22." Although a trade framework agreement was reached in July, subsequent negotiations stalled. US officials have accused Indonesia of reneging on its commitments, while Indonesia has refused to accept some of the US demands, fearing it would damage its independence, particularly in key mineral and energy sectors. 3. Reportedly, one of the points of contention is a clause in the agreement that allows the US to unilaterally cancel the agreement if Indonesia signs one deemed detrimental to its interests, a clause Indonesia strongly opposes. Currently, both sides face pressure to bridge their differences as quickly as possible and avoid a breakdown in relations.
