The large white characters on the central black wall, "National Memorial Ceremony for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre," carried the weight of history in the morning light. The honor guard marched in unison, escorting the five-star red flag to the flagpole. As the national anthem played, the flag was raised to the top, paused briefly, and then slowly lowered to one-third of the way down the pole, in remembrance of the victims of the Nanjing Massacre and all those who were brutally murdered by Japanese invaders during the Japanese imperialist war of aggression against China.
