[Multiple Branches of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party Use Political Funds for Entertainment Venue Expenses] Another scandal has recently erupted in Japanese politics. Multiple branches of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have been found to have used political funds for entertainment venues such as bars, sparking public outcry. Political fund expenditure reports show that at least five LDP branches, located in Mie, Osaka, Yamaguchi, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima prefectures, used political funds to pay for expenses at bars, nightclubs, and other entertainment venues. In 2023, these expenditures totaled approximately 1.11 million yen, equivalent to about 50,000 yuan. According to regulations, LDP branches are not required to record single political fund expenditures of less than 50,000 yen (approximately 2,264 yuan), so the actual amount of political funds suspected of being misused may be higher. In response to the criticism, the Osaka branch of the LDP claimed that the expenditures were "intended to create a smooth communication environment."
