[South Korea is studying allowing foreign-issued credit cards to be used directly for bus and subway rides] To improve travel convenience for foreign tourists, the South Korean government is studying the introduction of an open public transportation payment system that would allow foreign-issued credit cards to be used directly for bus and subway rides, potentially offering the same transfer discounts as domestic passengers. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport commissioned a professional team this month to begin research on the plan, with the project expected to be completed by the end of next year. Due to the involvement of payment system integration and infrastructure upgrades, the policy is expected to be implemented as early as 2027. Currently, foreign tourists in South Korea need to purchase transportation cards or single-journey tickets in advance to use public transportation; the new measure will simplify their travel process.
