[Ireland's Natural Gas Demand Surges 15%, Pressures Heating and Power Generation] ⑴ According to the latest data from Gas Network Ireland, overall natural gas demand increased by 15% month-on-month in November, mainly due to increased heating in homes, businesses, and public buildings caused by wet and changeable weather. ⑵ However, year-on-year, overall demand decreased by 8%, primarily driven by a 13% year-on-year decrease in gas-fired power generation demand. ⑶ The largest monthly increase in demand was in the residential sector, surging 57% month-on-month, as cooler temperatures in the second half of the month prompted more frequent use of heating. Demand also recorded double-digit month-on-month growth in several other sectors, including education parks, recreational sports venues, retail, hotels, and office buildings. ⑷ In terms of power generation, natural gas contributed 42% of Ireland's electricity generation in November, up from 39% in October, but down 9 percentage points from 51% in November last year. Gas-fired power generation accounted for a peak of 79% and a minimum of 16% during the month. (5) Although wind and solar power contribute 36% of electricity, their output sometimes disappears almost entirely, highlighting the continued necessity of flexible gas-fired power generation to ensure grid security and reliability. The impact of weather patterns on energy use and power generation structure is clearly shown in the data.
