[Japan's Ruling Coalition Pushes for Lifting Arms Export Ban] On December 15, Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held consultations with the far-right Japan Innovation Party (NIP) within its ruling coalition. They confirmed that they will compile their opinions on abolishing the export restrictions on five categories of equipment under the "Three Principles on the Transfer of Defense Equipment" guidelines by February next year and formally submit related policy recommendations to the government. Currently, Japan's "Three Principles on the Transfer of Defense Equipment" guidelines only allow the export of five categories of equipment: rescue, transportation, surveillance, monitoring, and mine clearance. Once this policy is abolished, Japan will be permitted to export a variety of equipment, including lethal weapons. On the same day, several Japanese peace groups held a meeting to oppose the lifting of restrictions on lethal weapons exports and submitted a petition signed by tens of thousands of people to the Diet opposing the lifting of the arms export ban.
