[First Cross-Sea Interconnection Project in Beibu Gulf Begins Submarine Cable Laying] At approximately 10:00 AM on December 16th, as the cable-laying vessel Dejing 106 entered the designated waters near Weizhou Island, the laying of the submarine cable for the first cross-sea interconnection project in the Beibu Gulf—the China Southern Power Grid 220kV Weizhou Island Cross-Sea Interconnection Project—began. This is the first 220kV submarine cable in China to use domestically produced insulation materials. After its commissioning, the project will end Weizhou Island's history of operating as an isolated power grid, injecting strong momentum into Guangxi's maritime economic development. According to calculations, after the project is operational, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 4,318 tons based on gas-fired power generation. Taking island guesthouses as an example, the cost of diesel generators (300 yuan per hour during peak season) will be replaced by a stable power grid supply, significantly reducing operating costs and demonstrating significant energy conservation and carbon reduction effects. Furthermore, the project can also accommodate the grid connection needs of offshore wind power near the island, providing a crucial transmission channel for future offshore wind power in the Beibu Gulf and creating a new energy fulcrum for strengthening the maritime economy.
