[German Manufacturing Sector Contracts at Fastest Pace in Ten Months in December] ⑴ Preliminary data showed that Germany's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell to 47.7 in December from 48.2 in November, below the expected 48.5, marking the sharpest decline in ten months. ⑵ Output contracted again, ending nine consecutive months of growth, while new orders fell at the fastest pace since January, partly due to a sharp decline in export sales. ⑶ Backlogs of work declined for the second consecutive month, reflecting weak demand and limited capacity pressure. Manufacturing employment fell again, although the pace of layoffs slowed slightly compared to November. ⑷ On the price front, manufacturers recorded their first increase in input costs since January 2023, related to rising commodity prices (particularly metals) and longer supplier delivery times. ⑸ Despite the current weak conditions, manufacturers' business confidence improved, with optimism for the coming year rising to a six-month high.
