[Trade Surplus Narrows, Trade Gap Widens Between EU and Non-EU Markets] ⑴ Data released by the Italian National Institute of Statistics on Tuesday showed that Italy's global trade surplus in October was €4.156 billion, narrowing from €4.619 billion in the same period last year. ⑵ The narrowing surplus was due to faster import growth than exports; exports increased by 2.3% year-on-year in October, while imports increased by 3.4%. ⑶ Looking only at trade with EU countries, Italy recorded a trade deficit of €1.31 billion in October, a significant increase from €650 million in the same period last year. ⑷ Specifically, Italy's exports to EU countries increased by only 0.5% year-on-year in October, far lower than the 2.7% growth rate of its imports from the EU. ⑸ The data comparison shows that Italy remains highly competitive in non-EU markets, but its trade performance within the EU is relatively weak, leading to a decrease in the overall trade surplus.
