[Venezuela Accuses US of "State-Level Piracy" to UN Security Council] On December 16, local time, the Venezuelan government formally submitted a note to the UN Security Council, accusing the United States of forcibly boarding, hijacking, and seizing cargo of a civilian merchant ship transporting Venezuelan oil in international waters of the Caribbean Sea on December 10, constituting "state-level piracy." Venezuela stated that US forces forcibly boarded the vessel, which was legally engaged in international trade, on the high seas, took control of and kidnapped the crew, whose whereabouts remain unknown, and illegally seized the oil cargo on board. Venezuela pointed out that this action seriously violated the UN Charter and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and was carried out without any authorization from the Security Council. (CCTV)
