Canada's population fell 0.2% in the third quarter, the first decline since the pandemic. Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday that the country's population decreased by 0.2% in the third quarter, falling back to 41.6 million. This is the only quarterly population decline on record outside of the COVID-19 pandemic, a stark contrast to the surge in immigration after the pandemic. According to Statistics Canada, the shrinking size of the temporary population is the core reason for the population decline. Canadian Prime Minister Carney continued his predecessor's policy direction, focusing on reducing the number of international students, temporary workers, and asylum seekers—groups that saw significant growth between 2023 and 2024. In the third quarter, Canada's population grew by only 0.2% compared to the same period last year, marking the lowest growth rate since records began in 1947. This figure is far from the 3.2% annual growth rate in 2023, when the country's population growth rate was comparable to that of some developing countries with high birth rates.
