[Institutional Views: Sterling's Decline May Be Short-lived if Bank of England Cuts Rates] ⑴ ING analysts stated in a report that if the Bank of England decides to cut interest rates, the pound's decline may only be temporary. ⑵ The market generally expects the Bank of England to cut rates by 25 basis points, with an average expected vote of 5 to 4 in favor of the cut, but a 6 to 3 risk exists. ⑶ Analysts stated that although the result would be a mild negative for the pound, speculative positions are already significantly underweight on the currency. ⑷ They pointed out that after the Bank of England's decision, the euro/pound exchange rate may surge to the 0.8820-0.8840 range, but will quickly fall back to 0.8750.
