High oil prices have dampened public opinion, with two-thirds of Americans abandoning Trump's war goals, putting downward pressure on the dollar.

2026-04-01 11:07:19

A recent survey shows that two-thirds of Americans believe the United States should strive to end its involvement in the war with Iran as soon as possible, even if it means failing to achieve the goals set by the Trump administration. In the survey conducted last Friday through Sunday (March 27-29), approximately 66% of respondents held this view, 27% said all goals should be achieved even if the conflict continues for a longer period, and 6% did not answer.

This poll, which collected feedback from 1,021 respondents, reflects growing fatigue among the American public regarding continued military intervention and its impact on the domestic economy.

Party Differences

Among Republicans, 40% support ending the conflict quickly even if it fails to achieve American goals, while 57% support extending the intervention period to achieve all objectives. This data demonstrates significant divisions even within Trump's supporter base.

Democrats and independent voters show higher support for a swift end to the war, and overall public opinion leans towards avoiding a protracted conflict. The survey highlights a shift in the American consensus on the war with Iran toward a desire to "end it as quickly as possible."

Attitude towards military strikes

The survey also showed that 60% of respondents disapproved of a US military strike against Iran, while only 35% supported it. This opposition is consistent with the results of several recent polls, reflecting public skepticism about the necessity and long-term costs of war.

Gasoline prices rise sharply

According to data from price tracking service GasBuddy, one of the most significant impacts of the war on the United States is the rise in gasoline prices. This rise is directly related to the disruption of supplies in the Strait of Hormuz and the volatility in global crude oil prices caused by the tanker attacks, and has become an important factor affecting the daily expenses of ordinary American families.

Soaring gasoline prices have further amplified public discontent with the war's economic situation, prompting more people to support an end to the conflict as soon as possible.

Analysis of public opinion background

Against the backdrop of Trump's repeated statements that he might withdraw from Iran within two to three weeks and that gasoline prices would drop significantly after the withdrawal, this poll result provides important public opinion reference for the White House's decision-making. Public concerns about the potential economic burden and casualties of a protracted war, coupled with rising domestic energy costs, have made "ending it as soon as possible" the mainstream opinion.

Although some Republicans still insist on achieving all the goals, overall public opinion trends indicate that American public patience with a war with Iran is rapidly waning.

Analysis of the impact on the US dollar

This poll shows that 66% of Americans support ending the war with Iran as soon as possible, even if the objectives cannot be fully achieved, reflecting strong public dissatisfaction with high oil prices and the economic burden. This public pressure may prompt the Trump administration to accelerate the withdrawal of troops, and the expectation of withdrawal would exert downward pressure on oil prices, potentially easing inflationary pressures and weakening the safe-haven appeal of the dollar. Therefore, if the US responds to public opinion and quickly ends the conflict, the dollar may face downward pressure in the short term.

During Wednesday's Asian trading session, the US dollar index fluctuated narrowly around 99.80, following a significant pullback in the previous trading day, with a daily decline of 0.61%.

Editor's Summary

Polls show that 66% of Americans support ending the war against Iran as soon as possible, even if all objectives are not fully achieved, while 60% oppose military action. Meanwhile, high and volatile gasoline prices have exacerbated economic pressures. Although there are divisions within the Republican Party, overall public opinion clearly points to avoiding a protracted conflict. This result could influence the Trump administration's subsequent troop withdrawal timetable and negotiation strategy, highlighting the sensitive reaction of American public opinion to the costs of war.

At 11:06 Beijing time, the US dollar index is currently at 99.79.
