[South Korea Encourages Off-Peak Public Transportation Use Amid Tight Energy Supply] The South Korean presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, announced on March 3 that, in response to the tightening energy supply caused by instability in the Middle East, the government plans to offer incentives to encourage the public to use public transportation during off-peak hours. Yonhap News Agency quoted Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Jeon Eun-soo at a press conference on March 3 as saying that the South Korean government held an emergency response meeting on March 2 to discuss specific plans to distribute public transportation demand during peak hours. The public sector will be the first to introduce a flexible commuting system, and the feasibility of extending this policy to the private sector will be studied later. (Xinhua)
