[US Supreme Court Approves Trump Administration's Request to Dismiss Bannon's Criminal Conviction] On April 6, local time, the US Supreme Court formally granted the Trump administration's request to dismiss the criminal conviction of conservative activist and former White House advisor Stephen Bannon. Bannon had previously been convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a congressional subpoena and had served four months of his sentence. The Supreme Court's ruling, based on a joint application by Bannon and the US Department of Justice, overturned the federal appeals court's decision upholding his conviction and remanded the case to the Washington, D.C. District Court for the U.S. Attorney, Jeanne Piro, to review the request to dismiss the charges. In her application dated February 9, Piro stated explicitly, "The government, within its prosecutorial discretion, believes that dismissing this case is in the interest of justice." Generally, federal judges do not have the power to overturn a decision by the Department of Justice to dismiss a case during the trial. As an ally and former advisor to Trump, Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress in 2022 for refusing to cooperate with a House committee's investigation into the January 6, 2021, riots at the Capitol. Although he has served his full sentence in 2024, he has appealed the jury’s guilty verdict. He filed an appeal with the Supreme Court last October after losing in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.
