According to US officials, in order to rescue the second crew member of an F-15E fighter jet shot down in Iran, US B-1 bombers dropped approximately 100 heavy bombs, each weighing 2,000 pounds, during the mission. One official stated that to ensure the success of the rescue mission, the bombs were dropped on roads, areas where the crew members were located, and Iranian Revolutionary Guard positions. The US military focused on damaging roads around the rescue site to prevent Iranian forces from approaching US troops and aircraft.
