[Iran Blocks Strait of Hormuz for Weeks, No LNG Ships Have Yet to Pass Through] 1. According to traders involved in shipping, Iran has not allowed any ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to pass through the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of conflict weeks ago. Approximately one-fifth of the world's LNG supply remains cut off. 2. On Monday, two tankers carrying Qatari LNG attempted to leave the Persian Gulf but turned back hours later. Traders said the two ships were not allowed to pass by Iranian officials. This turnback highlights the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. 3. Sources say that fully loaded LNG carriers are currently scattered throughout the Persian Gulf, either not yet involved in passage negotiations or yet to receive approval. Ship tracking data shows more than a dozen fully loaded LNG carriers stranded in the area. 4. Both traders and ship tracking data indicate that only one LNG carrier passed through the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month—but it was not carrying cargo. Some vessels may have evaded monitoring by turning off their transponders, or signal interference may have made tracking inaccurate.
