[Former CIA Director David Petraeus: Iran may “wink” on the Strait of Hormuz, and the Strait will be opened unconditionally if an agreement is reached] (1) Former CIA Director and retired four-star general David Petraeus said that Iran seems prepared to make concessions (“wink”) on the Strait of Hormuz issue. If a successful peace agreement is reached with Tehran, the Strait will be reopened without any conditions attached, and Iran will not be allowed to control traffic, collect tolls, or threaten to close it again in the future. (2) Petraeus pointed out that the Iranian navy has been “basically sunk” and its missile capabilities have been greatly weakened, but it can still threaten the security of the Strait through mines, drones, and speedboats. If Iran is allowed to have some control over the Strait, its strategic position may be strengthened. In addition, Iran’s insistence on retaining its stockpile of enriched uranium and charging ships for passage is the main obstacle to the negotiations. (3) Regarding the US attitude, Trump urged the negotiating team not to rush the deal, while Secretary of State Rubio said that an agreement could be reached “today” and the US would make every diplomatic effort. Petraeus believes that more intractable problems such as the nuclear program and proxy armies are unlikely to be resolved in the short term.
