[Meta to Lay Off Nearly 1,400 Employees in Washington State, Accelerating AI Restructuring] (1) As part of a large-scale restructuring centered on artificial intelligence, Meta will lay off nearly 1,400 employees in Washington state, affecting Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, and remote positions, effective July 22. (2) Affected positions include software engineers, data scientists, content designers, IT staff, etc., with engineering and product managers being the hardest hit: 699 people will be laid off in one Bellevue office, 259 people in two Seattle offices, 206 people in one Redmond office, and 231 remote employees across the state. (3) A Meta spokesperson said the adjustments vary by team and include layoffs, closing vacant positions, and reassigning thousands of employees to key priority positions. This is part of Meta’s global layoff plan last month—to cut about 10% of its employees globally (about 8,000 positions) while reassigning thousands to AI positions. (4) Employees affected by the Washington state layoffs were notified on May 20 and will continue to receive salary and benefits until their departure. As of the end of March, Meta had nearly 78,000 employees worldwide.
