[EU New Car Registrations Up 5.1% in April, Tesla and BYD Stand Out] 1. According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), new car registrations in the EU reached 972,000 units in April 2026, a year-on-year increase of 5.1%. If the European Free Trade Association and the UK are included, the total number of new passenger car registrations in the European market reached 1.152 million units, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%. 2. Among major automotive groups, Volkswagen Group's sales increased by 3.5% year-on-year in April, with a cumulative increase of 2.1% in the first four months of the year. Stellantis' sales increased by 6.7% year-on-year in April, with a cumulative increase of 7.1% year-to-date. Renault Group, however, saw a decline, with sales down 3.6% year-on-year in April and a cumulative decrease of 6.5% year-to-date. 3. BMW Group's sales increased by 2.4% year-on-year in April, with a cumulative increase of 3.1% year-to-date. Mercedes-Benz performed even better, with sales up 7.0% year-on-year in April and a cumulative increase of 3.4% year-to-date. Ford's sales fell sharply by 13.2% year-on-year in April, with a cumulative decrease of 14.3% year-to-date. 4. Toyota Group's sales fell 0.8% year-on-year in April, and have declined 2.3% year-to-date. Nissan's sales fell 9.8% year-on-year in April, and have declined 10.3% year-to-date. 5. Electric vehicle brands performed particularly well. Tesla's sales rose 46.5% year-on-year in April, and have increased 45.8% year-to-date. BYD's growth momentum was even stronger, with sales surging 114.5% year-on-year in April, and a year-to-date increase of 143.9%.
