[Pentagon Fiscal Year 2027 Budget: US Army Size Only Symbolically Increases by 282] (1) US War Secretary Hergsays had stated that the Army had achieved its recruitment targets and that its numbers would increase next year, but according to the Pentagon's fiscal year 2027 budget request, the Army's size will only increase slightly. (2) The recruiting plan increased from 61,500 to 65,000, but the total number of Army personnel only increased by 282 (to 488,016). The number of core personnel increased by 6,324, mainly through the reduction of 6,042 reservists. (3) In March of this year, the Army raised the upper age limit for recruits from 35 to 42 and relaxed the recruitment criteria for those with criminal records of marijuana use in order to overcome the personnel replenishment crisis in 2022-2023. (4) Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kane stated in May that the total number of US military personnel, including the Air Force and Navy, is 1.8 million.
