[UK Energy Price Cap Raised by 13%, Average Household Annual Bill Rises to £1862] ⑴ From July, the annual energy bill for typical dual-fuel (gas and electricity) households in the UK will increase by several hundred pounds. The UK Energy Regulatory Authority (Ofgem) announced a 13% increase in the residential energy price cap, raising the annual limit for average households from £1641 to £1862. ⑵ For average households using the supplier's standard default rate, the monthly bill will increase by £18. This is the first time the annual energy bill has reached this high level since January 2024. ⑶ The situation in Iran has pushed up wholesale energy prices, impacting the bills of residents in England, Scotland, and Wales for the first time. Due to the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and gas shipping route carrying 20% of global oil and gas transport, has been disrupted. Wholesale energy prices began to rise in February and surged in March. ⑷ However, due to higher summer temperatures, the demand for electricity and gas from UK residents is generally lower, so the pressure from this price increase will be relatively milder than in winter.
