[Heat Wave and Sharp Drop in Wind Power Cause German Electricity Prices to Jump 29% as Cooling Demand Surges to Decades High] ⑴ German electricity prices jumped 29% on Wednesday as a heat wave across much of Europe boosted cooling demand, while wind power output was expected to decrease by 9.7 gigawatts to 4.4 gigawatts from the previous day, forcing the grid to rely on more expensive power sources such as natural gas and coal to cover the demand gap. ⑵ EnergyScan, a subsidiary of the French Engie Group, analyzed that unusually warm weather was the dominant factor, with cooling days (a measure of air conditioning demand) reaching their highest level for this time of year in decades. This warm pattern is expected to continue until the weekend, keeping electricity demand high, while strong solar power output during the midday hours continues to ease pressure on the grid. ⑶ According to weather forecasts, temperatures in southern and western Germany are expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with midday peaks exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in most parts of France. Remaining load (covering non-renewable energy generation) is expected to increase by 8.2 gigawatts to 23.5 gigawatts, indicating that traditional energy output needs to be significantly increased to balance the system.
