[US April PCE Inflation Expected to Remain High, Core PCE May Rise to 3.3%] ⑴ The US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index is expected to rise 0.5% month-over-month in April, following a 0.7% increase in the previous month, which was the largest rise since June 2022, driven by soaring energy costs due to the conflict with Iran. ⑵ The core PCE index, excluding food and energy, is expected to rise 0.3%, unchanged from the previous month. ⑶ On an annualized basis, overall PCE inflation is expected to accelerate for the second consecutive month, rising to 3.8% from 3.5% in March, reaching its highest level since May 2023, consistent with the overall CPI inflation trend. ⑷ Core PCE inflation is also expected to rise slightly to 3.3% from 3.2%, the highest reading since the end of 2023. ⑸ Overall, the report likely reinforces the view that inflationary pressures remain high, well above the Fed's 2% target.
